SMART Staff
While the SMART Initiative is comprised of a dedicated team of interdisciplinary professionals, official SMART staff are housed at the UT Institute for Public Service.

Dr. Jennifer Tourville is an East Tennessee native. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Vanderbilt University and continues to practice as a nurse practitioner. Her previous role with UT was as faculty with the College of Nursing where she taught newborn and pediatric courses and mentored student research related to neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome. Dr. Tourville also co-directs a Rural Communities Opioid Response Program grant funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration, which provides various substance use disorder services to rural East Tennessee communities. She also serves on several university and community task forces.

Though he grew up in Memphis, Jeremy Kourvelas has spent over a decade in East Tennessee. After graduating from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s in psychology, he spent more than four years in multiple emergency departments in Knox, Roane, Blount and Claiborne counties as a medical scribe. He returned to UT for a master’s in public health and certificate in health policy and became SMART’s first employee in 2022. He also works for the Prevention Alliance of Tennessee, which seeks to advance prevention efforts pertaining to substance, alcohol and tobacco use disorders.
